Frequently asked questions
About HealthShare Technology Solutions
What is HealthShare Technology Solutions?
We’re a software company that simplifies healthcare cost-sharing administration. We build technology that reduces the administrative load of Health Care Sharing Ministry (HCSM) programs, particularly those using Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM), while keeping the care and financial support these ministries offer. (Medical cost sharing is not insurance.)
Our team combines years in healthcare benefits administration and software development to help both plan administrators and members manage medical expenses.
What is the HealthShare app?
The HealthShare app helps members track medical expenses and interact with Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM). It’s available as a web app and as mobile apps for iOS and Android.
It walks you through the reimbursement process end to end, from uploading a receipt to submitting a request to CHM.
How does HealthShare work with Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM)?
HealthShare helps you navigate CHM’s reimbursement process. The app helps you:
- Track your medical expenses in one place
- Auto-fill CHM submission forms with your information
- Submit expenses to CHM with the required documentation
- Monitor the progress of your submissions
- Handle standard submissions, add-ons, personal responsibility, and HRA submissions
The app knows CHM’s requirements, so you’re more likely to submit complete documentation the first time and see fewer delays.
Who is HealthShare designed for?
Two audiences:
Organizations — churches, ministries, and other groups that offer CHM-based healthcare benefits to their staff. HealthShare cuts the administrative workload for plan administrators.
Members — employees and individuals enrolled in CHM-based programs who want a simple way to track expenses, submit requests, and get reimbursed.
Alice AI assistant
What is Alice, and how does she help me?
Alice is the AI assistant built into the HealthShare app. She helps you manage reimbursement by:
- Answering questions about your reimbursements, submission requirements, and CHM policies
- Reaching out to healthcare providers on your behalf, by email and phone
- Pulling information from your medical bills and receipts
- Telling you what’s next on your submissions
- Keeping your provider communication organized in one place
Alice is available through in-app messaging any time you need her.
Can Alice really call my healthcare providers?
She can. Alice makes automated phone calls to healthcare providers to request itemized bills. Here’s what that requires:
- Your provider has a phone number on file
- Your plan administrator has approved that provider for AI calling
- You’ve authorized communication with the provider
- The date of service was at least 5 business days ago
Once those are in place: you or your admin requests an itemized bill through the app, Alice confirms the provider is eligible and places the call, the conversation is transcribed and stored in your account, and you get the itemized bill when the provider responds.
It saves you the hold-music hour on the phone with a billing department.
Is my data private when I use Alice?
Your conversations with Alice are secured, and you control your data:
- You can opt out of having your conversations used for AI training
- Messages, transcripts, and documents are encrypted
- Only you and authorized administrators can view your conversations
Alice includes a clear disclaimer that she can make mistakes, and we encourage you to verify anything important.
Using the HealthShare app
How do I submit medical expenses for reimbursement?
- Add your expense. Upload a receipt photo (the app can pull the details automatically) or enter it by hand.
- Create or assign an incident. Group related expenses under one medical incident, like a surgery or illness.
- Fill in what’s missing. The app’s checklist tells you what information it still needs.
- Request itemized bills, if you need them. Alice can do this for you.
- Submit to CHM. The app fills out the paperwork; you submit with one click.
- Track progress. Get notified when something needs your attention, and record your reimbursement once it arrives.
What is the smart checklist (to-do) system?
Instead of wondering what to do next, the app tells you. It creates to-dos automatically for things like missing expense details, itemized bill requests, submissions that are ready to go, payment records, advance repayments, document attachments, and personal responsibility.
Each to-do says what’s needed, when it’s due, and links straight to the action, then clears itself once you resolve it. The app groups these by incident and surfaces what’s most urgent, so nothing slips past a deadline.
What are advances, and how do they work?
An advance is emergency funding your plan administrator can provide before CHM reimbursement arrives, for when a bill is large and you need the money now.
You request one through the app against your expected CHM reimbursement. Your administrator reviews it, and approves, denies, or adjusts the amount. Once approved, the funds go to you, and the app tracks your CHM submission until reimbursement comes in. At that point you repay the advance, and your administrator confirms it’s settled.
The app keeps track of which expenses the advance covers, the estimated timeline, and repayment status and reminders. Advances are optional and must be turned on by your organization.
Is there a mobile app?
Yes. Get it on the App Store or Google Play.
The mobile apps carry every web feature, plus push notifications, camera capture for receipts, and an app badge for unread notifications. You can also use the web portal at app.healthsharetech.com.
Does the app process my receipts automatically?
Yes. HealthShare uses AWS Textract to read your receipts and medical bills. Upload a photo or PDF and, usually within seconds, the app can identify the provider, the date of service, the total amount, and line-item detail from itemized bills, then suggest which expense to attach it to.
Review the extracted information, fix anything that’s off, and attach it to the right expense. If the extraction misses something, you can flag it, which helps the system improve. This feature is optional and your organization administrator can turn it off.
For plan administrators
What features are available for plan administrators?
Administrators get a dedicated panel with role-based permissions covering:
- Members — add or remove them, view profiles, and follow their progress through submissions
- Advances — review requests, approve, deny, or adjust amounts, and track repayment
- Providers — maintain your provider directory, whitelist providers for AI calling, and view communication history
- Organization settings — configure your rules, submission instructions, feature toggles, and medical bill thresholds
- Monitoring — see member conversations with Alice, phone call transcripts, to-do lists, and submission progress across your organization
Can administrators customize the app for their organization?
You can shape the app to fit how your organization runs things: custom submission instructions, CHM form fields, medical bill thresholds, and rules for submission requirements. You can also turn features on or off, like AI calling, automatic receipt processing, and the advance system, and set your organization’s name and branding.
Technical and security
How secure is my medical data?
Security is something we take seriously, not just say we do:
- Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with file storage on AWS S3
- Authentication runs through Supabase, with multi-factor options and row-level security so you only see your own data
- We follow HIPAA-aware data handling practices, including Medical Information Release forms, and monitor with Sentry
- You can opt out of AI training use and delete your account at any time
We never share your medical information with third parties except as required to process your CHM submissions.
What technology does HealthShare use?
The web app runs on React, and the mobile apps run on Expo React Native for iOS and Android. The backend runs on Supabase (PostgreSQL) with a Laravel admin panel. We use AWS Textract for receipt processing, AWS S3 for file storage, Telnyx for AI phone calling, and Expo for push notifications.

Additional questions
Can I use HealthShare with sharing ministries besides CHM?
Right now, HealthShare is built specifically around Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM) — our forms and processes are tailored to CHM’s requirements. If your organization uses a different health care sharing ministry, email us at support@healthsharetech.com and we can talk about what customization would take.
What happens to my data if I leave my organization?
Your account is tied to your organization membership. If you leave, your administrator can remove your access to that organization’s data, and you can delete your account entirely from the Settings page. We keep some data as required by legal and compliance obligations. Ask your plan administrator about your organization’s specific retention policy.
Does HealthShare work for family members and dependents?
Yes. Add dependents to your profile, track their medical expenses, submit requests for them under your CHM membership, and follow separate incidents for each family member. It’s all kept secure under your account.
What if my question isn’t answered here?
